Unintended Exposure: Proper introduction: I’m a Malayali girl, currently pursuing my bachelors degree. My family consists of my dad, mom, younger brother, and myself. During our lockdown celebration, my most embarrassing moment occurred on the morning of my parents’ 20th wedding anniversary. We were all dressed in our traditional attire, and after cutting the cake in the morning and having sadhya for lunch, we played carrom and ludo. By 3 pm, everyone was tired, and my parents went to nap. My brother and I sat in the living room watching TV; I was listening to music on my phone. After a brief nap on the sofa, I woke up, sweating heavily, and I removed my dupatta to cool off. Unbeknownst to me, my tummy was exposed, and when my brother noticed, he was amused, but I was mortified.

Unforeseen Corrections
Getting Caught by Our Aunty: Another moment of embarrassment came when I borrowed my brother’s mini-bike and wrecked it. While attempting to ride it, I got jabbed in the gut with the handlebar, causing me to walk bent over for weeks. More importantly, my parents were also criticized by a friend, and when my mum came to tell me that someone was downstairs, we were caught in an awkward situation. Mom stared at my younger brother (Jerry) and then at me, who had covered up.
Teenage Innocence and Maturity
No Knocking NJL: In another instance of teenage innocence, when I was a teenager, my mom asked me to call my brother for dinner. I went to his room, opened the door without knocking, and saw him sitting on his bed, shirtless. He yelled at me, and I knew I had to be more considerate. This experience, while embarrassing, taught me the importance of knocking and maintaining respect for others’ modesty.
Embarrassment can arise from various contexts, such as cultural expectations, negligence, or simply being in the wrong place at the wrong time. These moments often serve as lessons in maturity, respect, and the value of considering the feelings of others.
The Conservative Elephant in the Room
Conservative Culture: The conservative culture in Kerala is evident in this story. Keralites traditionally prefer to stay well-covered in sarees or lehengas. It was particularly awkward and embarrassing for me as an individual from Kerala to have someone other than my mother notice my tummy and navel. Fortunately, my brother was understanding, but the moment left a lasting impact on me.

For example, my brother captured and shared pictures of me sleeping on the sofa, which brought laughter and a sense of relief to the situation.
